4 things you need to know about the Master of Management (MMgt)

With so many business education pathways available, it can be difficult to decide which programme is right for you. While the Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the preferred programme for many, the Master of Management (MMgt) is perfect for working managers looking to undertake an in-depth research project. If you’re wondering what makes the MMgt programme unique, read the below four points.

1. It is a researched-based degree

Unlike a Bachelor and other Masters programmes, the AIB MMgt has a primary focus on research. The research component involves the planning and writing of a thesis, which is constructed after an in-depth investigation. The project is designed to be useful in the candidate’s current organisation, allowing it to contribute to real change and tangible benefits. In addition, the candidate is required to use action research, case research or reflective practice methods, and critical evaluation skills.

2. There are two pathways which can be taken

At AIB, MMgt candidates have the choice of the ‘research-only pathway’, or the ‘professional pathway’. The research-only pathway sees candidates complete a thesis as the sole component, whereas the professional pathway mixes coursework with a reduced-length thesis. Coursework refers to up to eight postgraduate subjects, selected from those currently offered by AIB such as subjects undertaken throughout the MBA. While both options include theses, it is important to note that the research-only pathway sees candidates undertake a more in-depth research and critical evaluation.

3. There is scope for further study

Following completion of the MMgt, which can be achieved in 18 months or over 3 years if required, there is provision for suitable candidates to transfer to the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme. If this option is pursued, candidates are required to extend their research to write a longer thesis. This therefore extends the length of the study journey, however it allows candidates to achieve a DBA within just three years via this MMgt pathway.

4. It is a practical qualification

AIB prides itself on being ‘the practical business school’, offering students a hands-on and relevant education experience. Following the work-applied learning model, methods of action research, case research and reflective practice combine to ensure the education is of real value. For the AIB MMgt, this means that the research is likely to be of significant practical use to the candidate and to the organisation that is the subject of the study. Rather than just studying theories, AIB MMgt candidates will graduate with a real-world business focus, and knowledge which can be applied directly into their roles.
